Sumapp

Sumapp (still a working title) is a maths revision app, designed to supplement classroom learning by reinforcing traditional methods of drilling and learning. Conceived by a Secondary Maths Teacher, and supported by Innovate UK, the app also features a unique hints mechanism to further extend the classroom experience.

First Steps 

After an initial stakeholder workshop, we created a prototype for testing in a workshop setting. From this we were able to fully define our app requirements.

Our User flow accommodated for students, parents of students, and teachers, and helped us to select our technical stack.

The Hint System

The hint system is the key differentiator for this product. Designed to replicate a classroom environment, the hints are directly related to the question presented (conventional platforms provide examples of a question type, unlike a classroom-based teacher that will respond to and reference a specific question when helping students.

To categorise the multiple hints for each question type, I looked to replicate the classroom experience and in particular, teacher-pupil interactions, to create 4 levels of support within the app:

DEFINITION

An explanation of the problem that a teacher might give whole they are writing a question on the board.

HINT 1

An explanation to the whole class given as the response to the first query from the pupils.

The explanation given to a select group of students as they ask more specific questions as they try to solve a problem collaboratively.

The explanation given to an individual student at their desk as they point out a specific issue they are having with the problem.

UI Design

A bold, bright interface was created to provide a positive perception around solving math problems. An avatar was selected to add a focal point for activity.
